The impact of suicide is something that ripples beyond family and friends. You don’t have to be close to the person to experience all the raw emotions of shock, disbelief, sorrow, anger, and discomfort. I’ve attended two funeral services of lives lost to suicide and I still remember the detail of the days.

I stood in a room full of fellow students in shock…

family friends in disbelief…

guilt on the faces of loved ones left with a loss so deep that there are few words to describe the pain.

Each service left me numb- not because I was particularly close to the individuals, but for those who mourned so deeply.

These experiences helped me realize how vulnerable each of us is to this tragedy, and how little I knew to help prevent suicide.

I have learned since then that we all can help. This isn’t news to you as clinicians, but there are many people out there, like the former me, who could have the ability to possibly prevent a suicide. I encourage each of you to take an active role in Suicide Prevention Month.
